Mike
poses for the camera at Flagstaff Mountain Resort, a bar that was out of business under
renovations at the time of the photo, with the town of Jim Thorpe behind
him. Mountain Bike Weekend, June 1993.
This is a view looking north: we're standing on the easternmost portion
of Mauch Chunk Ridge, which runs west from here for about 10 miles. The
portion of town directly behind Mike is old "West Mauch Chunk" on Pisgah
Mountain, which is a ridge paralleling Mauch Chunk Ridge; the Train
Station is directly below his left hand on the fence. Across the Lehigh
River (you can see the bridge) is old "East Mauch Chunk," and the
mountain in the distance is Broad Mountain. When people talk about
riding in Jim Thorpe, they usually mean Mauch Chunk Ridge, Pisgah
Mountain, or Broad Mountain -- just so you know. (And in case you
haven't been driven insane yet by repetition, "Mauch Chunk" is local
Native American for "Bear Mountain.") We were camping at Mauch Chunk
Lake Park, a few miles west of town between the two ridges.
